BEGINNING READING CONFERENCE and the ELEMENTARY LITERACY AND READING RECOVERY CONFERENCE
STARTING IN 1969...
Conference co-founder and elementary classroom teacher, Mrs. Joan Duea working with Malcolm Price Laboratory School students
In 1969, the first BEGINNING READING CONFERENCE at UNI was conceived and organized by two members of the Price Laboratory School faculty. As primary teachers at MPLS, both Joan Duea and Delsie Charais Foreman consulted with elementary school administrators. This experience demonstrated that elementary administrators needed more knowledge about teaching kindergartners and first graders. Most administrators had no previous experience teaching children in lower elementary grades.
The first BEGINNING READING CONFERENCE, held in the spring of 1969, was intended for kindergarten and first-grade teachers and their principals. As enrollments for that first conference began pouring in, it became apparent that the room on campus reserved for this conference would not provide adequate space. Arrangements were made to hold the conference at a local hotel. Attendees were enthusiastic about the first conference, and it continued to grow and become increasingly popular with each passing year. This event grew to become one of the largest conferences held on the UNI campus for teachers throughout Iowa and the nation.
In 2008, under the leadership of Kim Miller and Denise Tallakson, (MPLS elementary teachers), the BEGINNING READING CONFERENCE became the ELEMENTARY LITERACY CONFERENCE. The purpose of this name change was to make the conference more applicable to a full range of elementary grades and to more fully connect the conference to the teacher education program and current UNI literacy initiatives.
The goals of the conference have evolved to align with Iowa’s professional development initiatives for teacher candidates, classroom teachers and teacher educators. These include:
- Provide professional development for teacher candidates, classroom teachers and teacher educators;
- Provide opportunities for UNI to reach out to schools throughout the state of Iowa;
- Access exhibits of professional materials;
- Network with teachers, presenters, exhibitors and authors;
- Interact personally with nationally-known children’s authors;
- Connect to School Improvement Plans.
