So Long
This document tells the story of the commitment by administrators and teachers to the inclusion of the teaching of classical, modern, and world languages in the curriculum offerings for students enrolled at a Training, Campus, and Laboratory School from 1896 to 2012.
The schools were part of what has become the University of Northern Iowa as it transitioned from the ISNS (Iowa State Normal School 1876-1909), ISTC (Iowa State Teachers College 1909-1961), SCI (State College of Iowa 1961-1967), and finally in 1968 to UNI.
Five languages were offered: Latin, German, French, Spanish and Russian. Their selection was influenced by trends of the times, the ability to hire teachers, administrative foresight, leadership of the national organization ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language), and world politics.
At least forty-two faculty taught in the Department. For many of them, what they taught, how they taught, why they taught the way they did, and the results of their teaching has been described.
Because it was written by those who taught during the last forty-two years, 1970-2012, their innovative teaching strategies and methods have been highlighted. They include the:
8th Grade Exploratory Language Program
Foreign Language Festivals
Travel: Latin, French, Spanish, and Russian Student and Teacher Trips and Exchanges
French and Russian Student Competitions and Awards
French IV Survey 1989-2005
Teaching World Languages in the Elementary School
Every attempt has been made to present the long-range picture of this department and its contribution to the culture of the school. The work of the historian is never finished and readers who were there are invited to contribute more to the story. We hope they will. This should be a living document. Contributions can be sent to the Web Master, Sarah Eastman at info@pricelabhistory.org
We who wrote it came to be a close group of friends devoted to a worthy cause. We hope you will find this work interesting and useful in your endeavors.
Teachers: Lowell Hoeft, James Sweigert, Mary Doyle, and Elizabeth Zwanziger; Coordinators: Judith Finkelstein, Barbara Lounsberry, and Joan Duea; Web Master: Sarah Eastman.
We began the Document, with these words of welcome:
